Sanaton kuvakirja : visuaalinen tarinankerronta lapsille

Abstract

Opinnäytetyön aiheena oli lapsille suunnattu sanaton kuvakirja. Tutkimuskysymys oli tutkia kuinka voi luoda mielenkiintoista kuvakirjaa ilman sanoja lapsille. Opinnäytetyön kirjoittamisessa käytettiin alan kirjallisuutta, esimerkkiteoksia ja kyselytutkimusta. Tutkimuksen tulokset hyödynnettiin produktion luomisessa. Produktiona toteutettiin kuvakirjakonsepti, joka sisälsi tarinan storyboardin, hahmon ja sidosasun suunnittelun ja kuvakirjakonseptin.

Tutkimus osoitti, että kun luodaan sanaton kuvakirjan lapsille, on otettava huomioon erilaiset konventiot, jotka liittyvät sommitteluun, väriin, hahmoon ja miten kuvakäsikirjoitus toimii. Kuvittajille toteutetun kyselyn mukaan suurin vaikeus sanattoman kuvakirjan kuvittamisessa on hahmojen tunteiden, ilmeiden ja eleiden välittäminen, sekä tarinan selkeys. Sanattomalla kirjalla on paljon yhteistä sarjakuvan ja animaation kanssa, ja siksi samoja menetelmiä ja tekniikoita voidaan käyttää luodessa niitä.

Yksilöllinen lähestymistapa oman ainutlaatuisen tarinan luomiseen on myös tärkeää, koska tietenkin ei ole olemassa yhtä oikeaa kaavaa. Sanaton kuvakirja tarjoaa kuvittajille erinomaisen mahdollisuuden vapauttaa luova potentiaalinsa. Lapset puolestaan oppivat luomaan ja kertomaan omia ainutlaatuisia tarinoitaan tutustumalla tähän kuvakirjan lajiin.

This report presents a thesis project the subject of which was children’s wordless picture books. The aim was to investigate the various aspects that contribute to crafting an interesting wordless picture book for children. The research materials included academic literature, both wordless and textual picture books, and a survey of illustrators. The project sought to create a concept for a wordless picture book that would appeal to children aged 3–6, complete with character design, a storyboard, 25 spreads, cover design, and book binding.

The study begins by examining how children perceive illustrations and the specific features that make picture books age-appropriate. A detailed analysis of wordless picture books follows, exploring their history, creation methods, and market appeal. Results of an illustrator survey are also analyzed.

The research reveals that wordless books share many similarities with comics and animation, and that the same methods and techniques used in those mediums can be applied to creating a wordless book. The survey also indicates that illustrators often struggle with conveying a clear story and emotions through their characters. The study suggests that composition, color, and character design conventions can assist illustrators in effectively telling their visual narrative. Ultimately, the thesis highlights the importance of developing an individual approach to creating wordless books, as there is no one-size-fits-all formula.

Wordless picture books offer an excellent opportunity for illustrators to showcase their creativity and broaden their skills, while children can develop their own unique storytelling skills by exploring this captivating genre.
