Ethnicity and Belonging : a Preschool Anti-Racism Toolkit

Abstract

The objective of this thesis was to create a toolkit for anti-racism work (a prototype for a future online blog) to be used in early years education and care facilities in Finland. An educational toolkit is a collection of resources, lesson plans and activity instructions that teachers can access easily to use in their classrooms. The lessons are based on research conducted and provided to teachers so that they can teach correctly on subjects that they may not currently have expertise in. It also supports teachers to learn about the subjects themselves with simple explanations and signposting of relevant resources.

The main objective of the toolkit is that these lessons provide an anti-racist education and improve children’s ability to feel included and able to participate regardless of their ethnicity or their citizenship. It also supports educators to take seriously their responsibility for social change.
