Paramedic nurses work in out-of-hospital settings where there are often bystanders and the patients’ loved ones present.
The purpose of this thesis was to introduce the ideas surrounding the ways healthcare workers, especially paramedics interact with the family members of the patients that see.
Research suggests that timely communication and giving honest and accurate information is a basis of what constitutes as good communication.
Outsiders, whether patients, their family members or onlookers often do not have much knowledge on how different aspects of health care work and can find themselves overwhelmed and confused. Having someone who has information on what is going to happen offering explanations and guidance gives comfort and reassurance which is often needed in these highly emotive situations.
Taking time to give information to these onlookers, providing them with direction and giving them space to express their emotions helps them cope better with the situation and helps in framing the event differently.
