Cocoa exports have long been the foundation of Ghana's economy, tightly connected to its colonial past and neo-colonial present. This thesis investigates the possible consequences of Ghana's decision to suspend cocoa exports on its economy and international trade ties. It investigates the historical context of Ghana's cocoa trade, the influence of media in creating public perception, and the cocoa sector's prospects. The study dives into the cocoa industry's social and environmental concerns, revealing long- standing issues such as poverty, inequality, and environmental deterioration.
This study aims to understand how Ghana can maximize the benefits of cocoa production, transition from a raw material exporter to a high-quality chocolate producer and address the broader implications for global trade by considering alternative economic strategies and potential partnerships. Focusing on a variety of sources, this thesis presents a thorough review of Ghana's cocoa trade and its potential to revolutionize the country's economic environment.
