Management of nurse burnout : guidebook for nurses

Abstract

Burnout among nurses in the healthcare industry is an issue of widespread concern globally. Nurses report heavy work pressure, long working hours, and human resource shortages in hospitals and other medical facilities. These factors may cause many negative consequences for nurses´ physical and mental health, the quality of patient care, and the operation of the entire healthcare system. However, burnout can be managed and controlled through sensible measures and policy regulation.

This thesis aims to provide a guidebook on managing burnout for nurses at Nursing Home Jalkaranta in Lahti, Finland. The purpose of this thesis is to prevent the problem of burnout in nurses during patient care in nursing homes.

The authors have used materials collected from various reliable sources. This thesis was written according to the thesis guidelines of LAB University of Applied Sciences. The knowledge base includes general information on managing nurse burnout: Definition of nurse burnout, causes of nurse burnout, how to manage nurse burnout, and the effects of burnout.

A practice-based approach was used to carry out this thesis using the PDSA (Plan, Do, Study, and Act) model and was implemented through collaboration with Nursing Home Jalkaranta. Feedback on the guidebook was collected through anonymous questionnaires from Nursing Home Jalkaranta nurses. The questionnaire was prepared according to the criteria of a good guidebook.
