Tiivistelmä
Shift work is widely recognised as being a risk factor for a wide range of health problems as well as increasing the likelihood of errors and negatively affecting quality of work. Following EU directives at Laurea University of Applied Sciences, practical placements account for 75 credits of the 210 credits assigned to the degree. Student placement schedules follow that of the practical placement institution. Shifts are primarily mornings and evenings with the possibly undertaking a few night shifts. The transition into shift work for nursing students represents a critical and potentially challenging time in a nurse’s studies and future career.
The purpose of the thesis was to produce an educational leaflet for nursing degree programme students’ about the possible challenging aspects of undertaking shift work and ways of best preparing and coping with shift work. The aim of this thesis was to help develop the knowledge and level of preparedness of nursing students undertaking shift work, with the
help of a leaflet.
This thesis is a functional quantitative study that uses co-creation with Laurea University of Applied Sciences as a working life partner. The theoretical framework explores existing literature on how shift work impacts circadian rhythm and sleep quality, health, social well being, and medical error. As well as means of coping by utilizing health practices based on sleep, exercise, diet, substance use, social support and leisure. The leaflet was created in electronic form and a PDF version was created and evaluated by students of Laurea through the use of an online survey questionnaire. The sample size of ten students responded positively to the leaflet as a useful tool of providing information and coping mechanisms for shift work and suggests that the issue is relevant for nursing students and opens up the possibility for further studies to investigate different forms of media being used to inform nursing students on the subject as well as larger scale study on the subject.
