Tiivistelmä
The aim of the thesis was to investigate the problems in sexual knowled§.t e in the schools of Kokkola. The idea was to find out what kind of knowledge the 9 graders have in sexual related matters. The study investigated the knowledge of the 9th graders about sexually transmitted diseases, the transmission of the diseases, birth control and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. In addition this research examined the resources where the 9th graders obtained the information about sexual related matters and their evaluation about their own knowledge.
The materials were gathered in form of questionnaires which included both structured and open questions. The data were collected in May 2008. The target group was the 9th graders in Kok.kola but only two schools namely Kiviniitty and Hakalahti attended in this study. The target group consisted of two classes from each school (N=38). The reply rate was 100% and the results were analyzed partly manually and partly by using Microsoft Excel.
The overall knowledge about sexual related matters was good. Girls' knowledge was slightly better compared with the knowledge of boys. There was uncertainty about the transmission of diseases and topics related to human papilloma virus, condyloma and cervical cancer. The most common sexually transmitted diseases were recognized well. However, more rare diseases for example trichomonas wasn't recognized at all. There were some weaknesses but the overall picture was good.
