Sports mega-events are believed to bring a great boost to the economy of hosting nation accounted for around 2 % of GDP, with the contribution of tourism between 4 % to 6 %. On the other hand, they also bring many threats that have been discovered in the previous events of that kind. This paper analyzes the impact of some specific sport events, indicating the progress, as well as, stating the problems that they brought to the hosting nations.
European Championship in football in 2012 is surely a great chance for Poland to boost its economy. It is not only a possibility to build the necessary infrastructure from roads and railways to airports and stadiums but also to finally create an image of Poland as a democratic, prosperous country with a mixture of both great heritage and modern style.
The paper discovers common trends of the past events and refers it to Polish reality. The examples of previous games give a necessary background in realization of the major goal which is relatively precise and credible forecast of economic and social impact of Euro 2012 on Poland.
The above mentioned goal has been achieved by conducting both desk research and questionnaire survey. The former one was made by gathering secondary data from various sources like: books, articles, internet, etc. The latter, was an email based questionnaire measuring support for European Championship in Poland on the group of 50 University students.
