Artificial intelligence (AI) is widely considered nowadays as one of the most innovative technologies of the 21st century, set to revolutionize every existent industry and transform the way how we live. AI have also been influencing the medical field for the past decades by releasing continuously new technologies for diagnosis, treatment and management of various diseases.
In the medical field, especially in imaging, AI have consistently demonstrated performance comparable or even better than real physicians in disease recognition and grading. In the field of ophthalmology, AI models have been extensively implemented in common diagnostic machines for decades, often without our awareness. The intersection between AI and ophthalmology is paving the way for a new era of eye care, revolutionizing the management of eye diseases that were once considered untreatable and severely debilitating. These advancements not only enhance patient outcomes, but they also contribute positively on the public health by reducing visual handicaps and impacting positively on the quality of life in the older age.
Nevertheless, application of AI in healthcare remains to some extent a controversial concept due to different challenges and principles surrounding different fields (such as privacy and ethical concerns) which require rigorous validations before entering clinical practices.
This thesis explores what is the present state of artificial intelligence integration in the care of glaucoma, the challenges encountered by AI but also the opportunities as well as groundbreaking technologies poised to reshape the way how we diagnose and treat this disease. The research delves into the transformative impact of AI on glaucoma, highlighting the need for modern healthcare to keep improving the existent AI models and implement these advanced technologies that are poised to improve the management of glaucoma at global scale in the coming years.
