Tiivistelmä
The theme of my master’s thesis is the Secret Garden. The name is the title for my art installation, designed for old Porvoo. In my thesis work I analyze contemporary art, where the gardens are the primary inspiration. I present the reflective ideas of different artists, their interpretation of the subject, different artistic ways of thinking and working.
In addition, I write about the beginnings of land-art, about the early environmental artists, and their close attitude to nature. In contrast I mention the projects built against the environment, I analyze the use of different materials. Finally, I analyse the impact of the garden on human well-being.
My environmental art project Secret Garden is based on Frances Hodgson Burnett's children's book. Children, who are the main characters from the book, change their lives and improves their well-being. Stepping into the secret garden is like a metaphor, that every person, big and or small, has the right to dream and has the longing for happiness.
In my writings I highlight Teemu Mäki's lectures in Kiasma and the artist's concern about environmental protection and the climate’s change (green manifesto). Art can be more ecological, and the contemporary artist should feel responsible for the waste caused by materials used for his/her work.
