This project is highly actual nowadays, when everyone has an access to the broadband Internetconnection and wants to keep in touch with a large group of people. The purpose of this project was to learn something totally new and useful, rather than doing something highly theoretical with none or minimal real value.
We started by trying to set up a web server with all necessary components manually. This was basically installing and configuring Apache, Php and MySql. An appropriate forum software was selected among many tested. Later on a more modern way was taken and a series of WAMPs (Windows, Apache, MySql and Perl) were tested, and the best one was selected. This was then combined with the chosen forum software, and after configuration we had an online forum which people from the Internet could connect and register to.
The result of this project was the knowledge to setup a web server and, for example, to implement a forum on it, so that people from the Internet could connect and register to it, When that criterion was fulfilled, the project itself was finished and worked properly. This project relied 100 per cent on open source software and proves that open source alternatives are as good as commercial ones, if not even better.
