Tiivistelmä
This thesis report presents the results of a project to modernize of Copart Finland’s intranet by utilizing a human resource-centric approach aimed at enhancing employee experience and efficiency.

Copart had recognized an urgent need for updating its intranet, where the thesis work was performed in collaboration with Copart´s management, and various stakeholders in HR, marketing, and IT. The aim of the research was to address the following three key research questions related to the intranet modernization.: What motivates employees to use the intranet? How do employees perceive its usability?, and How can the intranet be developed into a supportive management tool?

To answer these questions, an anonymous survey was conducted for Copart Finland´s employees. Based on the literature on the subject, as well as background information and discussion with Copart´s representatives, the researcher created an anonymous survey. The survey focused on five themes addressing the key research topics: Employee engagement and intranet utilization, user experience and usability, intranet modernization and technological integration, content management and information accessibility, and challenges with intranet modernization. Before distribution, the survey was vetted and tested by representatives to ensure the appropriate questions were included in the survey.

The researcher conducted an analysis of the survey results, which were evaluated in collaboration with Copart´s representatives. The results highlighted some of shortcoming with Copart´s previous intranet, including outdated content, poor user interface, and technical issues such as mobile usage and ineffective search functionalities. The analyzed results and findings were immediately applied to initiate Copart´s intranet improvement project.

The modernized intranet aimed to be an efficient tool for employees. Positive feedback received after the launch confirms that a human resource-centric approach to intranet design brings value, especially for employees, ultimately benefitting the organization.

In conclusion, this thesis offers insight into the important factors that can be considered during the phases of intranet modernization. These insights are derived from the theoretical framework and case study survey results, with a focus to ensure all considerations align with Copart’s HR functions. By using an HR-centric approach, this research shows how involving employees in the co-creation of the intranet can create value to corporate´s communication and management and thus better employee satisfaction, productivity, and performance.
