Hospitality is important for every country and makes a major part of GDP of the nation. Thus, around the world governments take several measures to upgrade and to encourage this sector. Nonetheless terrorism has had a significant impact on the hospitality industry, especially where countries have continuous ongoing security and terrorism related threats. This study, therefore, assesses the impact of terrorism on the operational and economic functioning of Mogadishu Peace Garden by analysing how management has responded to these security challenges.
Data in this study was obtained using qualitative methods from interviews conducted over email with four participants and six open ended questions.
The study results show that terrorism has a significant effect on tourism and hospitality sectors in Mogadishu. Industry stakeholders have said that the constant fear of terror attacks created a perception of danger in public spaces which discourages locals as much as tourists from visiting. This fear causes a great decline in the number of tourist arrivals to fall, and it will ultimately affect the operations on all hospitality businesses.
In response to these challenges, the study concludes by presenting security strategies specifically for the proposed Mogadishu Peace Garden and similar facilities in the region. This would hopefully rebuild faith in the hospitality sector and attract tourists to Mogadishu which could potentially benefit the broader economy of Mogadishu and its surrounding areas.
