As violent encounters in society are on the rise, there is a correlating increase in shootings and stabbings. Furthermore, violent crime and suicides are getting more frequent. For paramedics, penetrating wounds are not as common as are for example cardiac patients or sprains and broken bones. Therefore, it is important to keep up to date on treatment protocols in these types of injuries, to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients, as penetrating wounds can be difficult to treat and are often life threatening.
This thesis discusses about injury mechanisms in penetrating injuries, the most common complications and systematic treatment of these. We will focus on the initial assessment phase and move on to treatment and transport of patients. We did not include patients from special groups, such as paediatric patients and pregnant patients.
The thesis method is a literature review, using current data from books and online materials. The aim was to compile a useful information package for medical professionals and students to use in school and working life. Which is why the assumption is that the basic anatomy and treatment methods are familiar to the reader.
