This thesis examines the significance of training programs in supporting the integration and empowerment of immigrants in Finland, focusing on the Pakolaisapu NGO’s peer support program. The research investigates how such programs influence the personal and professional development of participants, enhance their sense of belonging to Finnish society, and shape their future aspirations. A qualitative approach was employed, with eight semi-structured interviews conducted among participants who completed the training. The study aimed to explore how the program equipped participants with essential tools to engage effectively in Finnish society and take an active role within their communities.

Participants shared their personal stories and experiences during the interviews, offering detailed insights into the impact of the training. A thematic analysis was applied to the collected data, with Zimmerman’s Psychological Empowerment Theory used as the analytical framework. This enabled a deeper understanding of the processes that contribute to empowerment and integration, as shaped by structured support and peer-led group activities.

The analysis of the interview content, combined with reflective feedback and participant narratives, revealed four major themes: (1) Professional and leadership growth, (2) Social network development, (3) Increased sense of belonging and cultural understanding, and (4) Future aspirations and motivation. Furthermore, the findings underscored that empowerment and belonging are deeply shaped by participants’ interactions with their environment, social networks, and the broader community structures.
