Tiivistelmä
This thesis aims to evaluate the feasibility of biochar production in Finland using straw. A techno-economic assessment was conducted using a model plant in order to analyse the production parameters, straw value chain costs, capital investment costs, operational costs, and potential revenue.
The study estimated the total costs between € 47 million and € 63 million under consideration of different scenarios and factors. The approximated market price for one ton of biochar is between € 585 and € 1.104 in order to be profitable for the used model plant. The estimate lies within the current market price for biochar in Europe.
The results indicate that biochar production in Finland using straw is feasible under consideration of used cost factors and conditions. The findings contribute to the understanding of the economic viability of producing biochar from agricultural biomass in Finland and highlight the benefits of biochar in a developing market.
