The objective of this study was to explore the feasibility of establishing a vertical farming business in Finland, focusing specifically on supplying microgreens to fine-dining restaurants. Using SimpleGreens as a case company, the study examined the complexities of market dynamics, the operational challenges of vertical farming, and the strategic decisions necessary for success.
This research takes a practice-based approach, drawing on market analysis, consultations with key stakeholders, and the unique challenges faced by SimpleGreens. The study addresses critical topics such as business model development, effective sales strategies, idea-testing techniques, and the role of innovation within the vertical farming sector. The key recommendations focus on the importance of specializing in niche products, securing investment, utilizing AI tools, and assembling a capable team to navigate both operational and regulatory challenges.
The findings offer practical insights for aspiring entrepreneurs looking to start and sustain a vertical farming business in Finland.
