The Experiences and Expectations of the International Students at KAMK

Abstract

The number of international students in Finland has risen in the recent years significantly. Kajaani University of Applied Sciences has seen a rise in its international student population, prompting the creation of this thesis. The experiences of international students about KAMK, about Finland and Finnish culture, as well their expectations on these topics before their arrival are all valuable information to KAMK, as this information can help in understanding and managing the international student experience to a more positive one. The first round of research was conducted with a quantitative research questionnaire answered by the international students, aided by the theory of 7 Dimension of culture by Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner, demographic data, and answers given by students regarding their experiences and expectations. The second round consisted of qualitative research in the form of interviews with six students, and a thematic analysis of their answers. Based on the answers gathered through quantitative and qualitative research, recommendations for the improvement of the international student experience at KAMK were given. As a conclusion, international students wish for more easily accessible information on topics concerning them, and better language teaching. The students would benefit from improved social circles, as that would promote their social and academic integration. The student union KAMO is suggested as a solution to facilitating better student social life. The teaching, the campus and overall academic experience at KAMK are enjoyed by students.
