Tiivistelmä
The amount of data in IoT is on the rise as more devices have internet capability and can be connected to a cloud service. Increasingly more complex dataflows have potential to cause issues that are difficult to manually investigate. Investigating these issues can be costly and time consuming for companies, while also causing service disruptions for end users. As technology develops, fundamental data transmission issues remain. The causes for these issues include poor connectivity in edge devices, overloaded networks, and software bugs.

This work focuses on designing a customer-specific dataflow diagnostics software module for an IoT-gateway device. Dataflow issues are investigated in the customer’s case in environments where MQTT and Wirepas IoT-protocols are used. The designed diagnostics system monitors the flow of the customer’s sensor data from a Wirepas mesh network to a gateway device. The monitoring is also performed when the data is sent from the gateway to an IoT-cloud using MQTT.

The goal was to gather, store and validate diagnostic data from each sensor transmission. Supplementary diagnostic data of potential issues on the gateway was also gathered, and it was used in the validation. Non-NTP-synchronized system time was found to be a major issue in certain cases, as it would invalidate the diagnostics due to lack of correct timestamps.

The goal was met by designing and implementing the system to successfully gather and store diagnostics data on the gateway device, and by designing and applying measures to detect invalid diagnostics data, while maintaining scalability for further extension of the diagnostics system.
