Tiivistelmä
The prevalence of depression among nursing home residents has been a well-founded concept. Residents may end up in nursing homes as they wouldn’t be able to take care of themselves independently due to ageing or disability. These residents may have had different lives and life at the nursing home could be very different to what they were used to. The new life may be routine to the residents with limited opportunities for novel experiences. In addition to other illnesses, many of these residents may suffer from depression. The reasons for this are multiple and complex.
The objective of the literature review is to understand the complex condition of depression, the factors contributing to it and effective interventions that can be employed in nursing homes. The planned outcome is to utilize the knowledge gained henceforth from the current literature on the management of depression among nursing home residents. The knowledge thus gained can give a broad perspective and understanding of depression among nursing home residents and can be applied directly in the workplace while providing nursing care for residents in nursing homes.
Databases such as CINAHL, Medline and PubMed were utilized and a literature review was conducted. The review aimed to answer the research question: What non-pharmacological interventions are used for managing depression among nursing home residents? From the databases, literature was selected using the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The selected articles were analysed using thematic analysis and were categorised into subcategories based on common themes.
Different types of interventions involving activity participation, cognitive stimulation, spiritual health promotion, emotional regulation, sensory stimulation and service satisfaction were identified that can be used in the reduction of depression symptoms. By creating awareness among the nurses working in nursing homes regarding the benefit of using these methods and advocating for the government to fund such interventions, the mental health of the older people in nursing homes could be improved.
