The insertion of indwelling urinary catheters is a common nursing procedure, yet it presents unique challenges, particularly when performed on female patients. The purpose of this study is to collect the information about the challenges in inserting an indwelling urinary catheter in female patients. This research aims to understand the challenges encountered by our target group specifically nurses in inserting an indwelling urinary catheter among female patients focusing on identifying areas for improvement in the nursing environment. This study shows the details of the different challenges in inserting an indwelling catheter among female patients. Catheterization is a common medical procedure but when it comes among female patients it becomes an inconvenience. To get a better understanding about this phenomenon, a literature review is conducted.
In this thesis, a Descriptive Literature Review was used as a research method. Data were collected from reliable academic databases such as Laurea Finna, PubMed, Sage, Proquest and CINAHL. Articles were selected carefully based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria to ensure the most relevant studies were included. Six articles were analyzed using Inductive Content Analysis. Findings were summarized into five main themes which is anatomical challenges, patient discomfort, post-menopausal vaginal atrophy, obesity, and positional challenges. In this conclusion, the results emphasize the different challenges nurses face when inserting indwelling urinary catheters in female patients. By identifying these challenges, the findings will help nurses to have a better understanding and enhance competency in female catheterization. These results can contribute to the nurse’s competence training specifically among female patients, evidence-based guidelines, and improved communication skills to enhance nursing practice and patient safety.
