Tiivistelmä
This thesis investigates how K/DA, a virtual K-pop group created by Riot Games, influences player engagement and community formation within League of Legends. Through qualitative research methods, specifically semi-structured interviews with seven active League of Legends players, the study explores how transmedia content affects player engagement patterns and contributes to community building.

The findings reveal that K/DA significantly influences player engagement through several mechanisms. First, it creates enhanced character connections by providing deeper narratives and personalities for champions beyond their in-game roles. Second, it offers multiple engagement pathways that allow players to interact with League of Legends content in ways that suit their interests and preferences. Third, the cross-platform content integration enables players to maintain connection with the game even when not actively playing.

Regarding community building, K/DA demonstrates substantial impact through various channels. The initiative facilitates creative expression within the community, as evidenced by the emergence of fan art, cosplay, and other creative endeavors. It develops shared experiences through events and content releases that bring players together beyond gameplay. Furthermore, K/DA creates diverse engagement opportunities that welcome both casual and dedicated players into the community, fostering a more inclusive environment.

The study's findings provide valuable insights for game developers and community managers about effective transmedia storytelling strategies and community engagement approaches. While acknowledging limitations such as sample size and convenience sampling, the research contributes to understanding how transmedia initiatives can enhance player engagement and community building in online gaming environments.
