The thesis was made as an assignment for the port of Kokkola - Oy M. Rauanheimo Ab, which is a local company providing logistical services to the port area. The company provides a wide range of services, including forwarding, stevedoring, freight forwarding, and customs clearance services at the port of Kokkola.
The thesis was made as a study on the closest competing sea ports nearby the port of Kokkola on the west coast of Finland. It provides the stevedoring company Oy M. Rauanheimo Ab and the port of Kokko la with more information about its competitors.
The theory part of this thesis supported a theory about ports and port authorities, freight terminals, competition according to the microeconomics theories and competition especially directed towards the competitiveness of sea ports.
The thesis was carried out through statistical studies, taken from the Finnish Maritime Association (FMA). Information was gathered for the years 2004 up to 2007. Data was carefully gathered and analyzed. Discussions with the general manager and the marketing manager of stevedoring company Oy M. Rauanheimo Ab. were made to help throughout the process.
