Youth Centre Villa Elba Oy is a limited company owned by the town of Kokkola employing regularly a bit less than 20 people. The company operates in the field of youth work providing interesting programme, tasty food and cosy accommodation in a seaside atmosphere with a priority task of developing youth work and arranging services provided to the youth work and young people. Villa Elba welcomes people of all ages to enjoy its hospitality as guests and employees.
This thesis contains two parts; a practical part with the aim of creating an employee handbook for Youth Centre Villa Elba, and a theoretical part exploiting the results of developing project of the practical part to offer the best advices on what to regard when creating an employee handbook for a small or medium size company.
The employee handbook of Villa Elba was designed to collect all the scattered personnel and company policies information within the company to one folder providing a functional guidebook that would support the employee relations, personnel strategies and management operations of the company. This development project was divided into four parts; 1. developing occupational safety and health, 2. producing informal policies to written material, 3. getting acquainted with the old policies of the company and the Finnish legal code concerning employer-employee relationship, and 4. composing an employee handbook for Youth Centre Villa Elba. The described practical part of the thesis has been declared confidential and will not be presented here in full extent.
The theoretical part of this thesis, presented here in public, has been composed after the developing project of creating an employee handbook for Youth Centre Villa Elba and thus; the aim of this part is to help small and medium size companies in creating an employee handbook, but also offer basic knowledge for business students on this matter. This part contains some theoretical background concerning personnel management and strategic personnel management in addition to relevant information gathered during the process of the practical part acknowledging seven sections of an employee handbook which were also included to the handbook of Youth Centre Villa Elba.
