Tiivistelmä
This thesis investigates the role of the Finnish Consulate General in New York in supporting Finnish businesses seeking to expand into the U.S. market, examining the relevance of cultural theories in contemporary business contexts and exploring how cultural differences influence daily operations and business success. The study focuses on the consulate’s efforts in facilitating high-level meetings, networking opportunities, and providing strategic guidance to Finnish companies. The study uses qualitative research methods, including a review of the SelectUSA Investment Summit, a comparative analysis of Finland and the U.S. using cultural theories, and a written questionnaire completed by key consulate officials. The findings reveal that the consulate plays a crucial role in building connections, offering visibility, and aiding companies in understanding and navigating the U.S. market. The research also highlights the enduring relevance of cultural theories, though it notes their limitations in fully explaining the nuanced challenges Finnish companies face. Practical adaptability and cultural intelligence are identified as key factors for success. Conclusions suggest that while cultural theories provide a foundational understanding, success in the U.S. market requires a more nuanced approach involving local networking, storytelling, and adaptability. The study also emphasises the importance of continuous consulate support in fostering successful business transactions. Further research could explore the long-term impact of these consulate activities on the sustained growth of Finnish businesses in the U.S.
