Tiivistelmä
The aim of this bachelor's thesis was to analyse the weld ability of HDPE plastic sheets, and to test how the different parameters affect the welding result. The tests were carried out by using two plastic sheets: the lower one was quality which absorbs the laser light and on that, nearest the laser, the plastic sheet was transparent.
In the beginning of the thesis, there is a review to the lasers and theory of laser light. Because in the practical part of this work, diode lasers are used, they are handled more exactly. Also the theory of laser welding of plastics is introduced.
The practical part of the thesis, deals with the absorption of the laser light to transparent plastic, and the effects of contamination of plastic to the absorption. To determine the effect of the air gap between the plates, there were many different sizes of air gaps tested by welding. In the tests for instance optics, welding speed, the laser power and the thicknesses of the sheets were changed.
