This study investigates the growth strategies employed by independent restaurant owners in Helsinki, Finland, recognizing the competitive nature of the Helsinki restaurant scene. A mixed-methods approach was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews with 10-15 restaurant owners and an online survey that was administered to 50 restaurant owners using Microsoft Forms. Qualitative data analysis revealed key challenges faced by restaurant owners, including intense competition, labor shortages, and adapting to changing consumer preferences. Growth strategies identified included market penetration, product development, market development, diversification, and leveraging technology. Quantitative analysis demonstrated a strong positive correlation between the implementation of diverse growth strategies and financial performance. Regression analysis revealed that restaurants implementing a combination of market penetration and product development strategies exhibited significantly higher levels of profitability. Furthermore, the analysis highlighted the critical role of resource utilization, with restaurants minimizing food waste exhibiting higher growth rates. The study emphasizes the importance of customer focus, innovation, and adaptation in navigating the competitive restaurant landscape. Key findings highlight the need for restaurants to build strong customer relationships, differentiate themselves through unique offerings, and leverage technology to enhance operations and reach new customers. The findings have implications for restaurant owners, policymakers, and industry stakeholders, providing valuable insights into the factors influencing restaurant growth and success in the Finnish context.
