Post-operative surgical wound care is essential to the patient care continuum, especially after surgery. Patients with wounds attributed to post-operative surgery are highly susceptible to adverse events, such as wound infections, which can adversely affect post-operative recovery. The purpose of this thesis was to describe nursing care practices of post-operative surgical wound in a hospital unit.
This thesis employed a literature review method, which involved the use of an inductive content analysis that helped identify themes from raw data on nursing care practices of post-operative surgical wounds. Data search was conducted on online databases, namely; PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library.
The researchers found that the key nursing care practices for post-operative surgical wounds in a hospital unit are wound dressing and care, pain management, and infection control. This thesis recommends further research on how to promote the well-being of nurses to ensure good nursing care practices of post-operative surgical wounds.
