Tiivistelmä
Pain is a significant issue that affects over 50% of the elderly. The numerous preexisting comorbidities and multiple medications taken by the elderly potentially make their pain management complex. The purpose of this thesis was to describe the nursing management of pain in elderly clients in nursing homes.
This literature review adopted PRISMA reporting guidelines, with studies retrieved from PubMed and Cochrane Library electronic databases using the search terms: “Pain”, “Nursing pain management”, “Elderly client” OR “Elderly resident” AND “Elderly nursing home” OR “Elderly care home” OR “Long-term care facility” OR “Skilled nursing facility” OR “Service house” OR “Geriatric home”. The extracted data was then analyzed using inductive content analysis.
The findings reveal that nursing pain management strategies in elderly nursing homes are mainly categorized as pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain management strategies. This thesis recommends conducting further research on urgent care strategies of pain control for elderly nursing home residents with severe cognitive impairments
