Tiivistelmä
The primary purpose of this thesis is to investigate the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in transforming traditional project management practices, further identify the challenges that prevent the use of AI in the current scenario, and explore the impact of AI on the role of a project manager. AI-driven applications promise intelligent automation, data-driven decision-making, and enhanced predictive capabilities. It is essential to also consider the risks and challenges associated with the adoption of AI.
This thesis is a case study and follows a qualitative approach with two types of data sources: primary and secondary data. The primary data will be acquired through in-depth, structured interviews with project management professionals experienced in the field to gauge their understanding, perceptions, and knowledge regarding AI integration in the project management field. The secondary data will be collected through a comprehensive literature review of academic journals, books, peer-reviewed articles, surveys, and previous research concerning the research topic. These two data sources will be analyzed using a triangulation approach to help gain a comprehensive understanding of the research topic.
The interviews provided valuable insights regarding the awareness, knowledge, and perspective of the project managers working with AI. The qualitative content analysis process generated concepts that helped answer the research questions. The findings of this research contribute to the understanding of organizations intending to effectively leverage AI to improve project management practices and achieve increased operational efficiency, productivity, and better project outcomes. The results also benefit the project managers by allowing them to gain knowledge and prepare for the prospective changes in the project management profession with the rise in emerging technologies.
