This thesis was commissioned by The Finnish Council of Shopping Centers – Suomen Kauppakeskusyhdistys ry. The council aims to enhance shopping center management practices including safety and security management. Amongst the safety and security challenges presented by the council, the group chose employees lacking basic safety and security skills and knowledge as the theme for developing the material. Untrained employees may have a significant impact on the business. Traditional safety and security training materials have been around for a long time, but they are losing their effectiveness because employees view them as dull, lengthy and time-consuming. The goal of this thesis is to create engaging and effective safety and security training material for the employees of shopping centers.
The thesis was carried out as a 5-day Design Sprint in which every day involves different stages. The process started by understanding and defining the main security issues and user needs. Over the following days, the group engaged in quick ideation, prototyping and testing the prototype using different methods such as brainstorming, peer reviews and crazy 8s.
As a result, gamified safety and security training material was created. The material addresses the main security challenge and user needs. It is visually appealing, integrated with training goals, with user friendly interface and it also includes feedback and performance metrics for future adjustments and continuous learning. Boredom is and would likely remain as one of the main reasons why employees do not actively participate in any training regardless of the theme. There is no universal solution to address this but combining traditional and gamified training methods could be an effective approach.
