Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this Bachelor's thesis was to find out individuals' motivations to gamble; more precisely the focus was on online poker and on its most popular form called Texas Hold 'Em. The aim of the bachelor's thesis was also to find out who play this game and why.
The target group was persons who play online poker on the internet. The questionnaire was made in an electronic form on a poker forum; answering the questionnaire was made simple for the respondents. A quantitative study method was chosen to ease the analysis of the data. The questions were associated with individuals' motivations to gamble.
The vast majority of respondents were males under 30-year-old that were studying or in employment relationship. Most of the respondents had heard about Texas Hold 'Em from the internet, still, word-of-mouth had been the biggest influencer to respondents for ending up on a casino site. Almost half of the respondents had tried Texas Hold 'Em for pure curiosity. Winning, excitement, and own development had been the biggest motivational factors to play. Poker forums were the most popular information sources. The most fascinating factor in the game was skills. Majority of the respondents did not feel that they were rewarded enough for the time and effort they put in playing. Half of the respondents saw poker as a hobby. More than 80 % of the respondents felt they were somehow addicted to the game of Texas Hold 'Em.
