This thesis has examined how nosocomial infections are transmitted and prevented. Specifically, the research has concentrated on the risk factors and/or the causes of nosocomial infections and how they can be prevented using a poster as an educational tool. Here, the main aim of this research has been to develop and produce a comprehensive poster for nursing students at LAB University of Applied Sciences. The purpose of this thesis is to raise awareness and knowledge of nursing students regarding the prevention of hospital acquired infections. This has been achieved by using the poster as an informative tool for disseminating and broadcasting tool, specifically, how the infections spread and are prevented. Data was collected from reliable databases.
This research has adopted a Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) approach as a reliable guidance in the production of an extensive poster. The PDSA model enhances analytical skills of the identified issues such as, the impact of preventive measures (for instance, hand hygiene, sensitization, and hospital sanitization) as strategies for controlling the spread of nosocomial infections within and without the healthcare settings.
A comprehensive poster has been developed. The poster has been used as visual strategic tool for the purposes of disseminating information and emphasizing the importance of asepsis: the strategies of preventing nosocomial infections. This way, information on prevention of nosocomial infections is widely broadcasted and communicated to nursing students at LAB university. In addition to proper healthcare settings sanitization, proper biowaste management (at all levels), as well as avoiding the use of invasive devices and invasive procedures unnecessarily and the misuse of antibiotics. Of essence, these strategies must always aim at being up-to par with technological advancement and development, as well as keep abreast of emerging diseases and infections. The research concludes that the use of posters as educational tool improves the student’s knowledge and understanding of HAIs, as well as influences their behaviours towards taking different preventive measures.
