This thesis explores the technical aspects of digital static vector icon creation, focusing on factors that contribute to icon clarity and legibility across a wide range of devices. It delves into display-specific characteristics such as pixel density, screen size, and resolution. In addition, examines rasterization and anti-aliasing techniques, their impact on clarity and legibility, and how to mitigate blurriness through methods like pixel-perfect placement, integer snapping, and grid fitting. In addition, showcasing the importance of effectively combining physical pixels and logical pixels is emphasized to achieve optimal legibility and clarity.
The focus group for this thesis consists of designers and web developers interested in creating icons for various devices. The goal is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved in digital icons, drawing on insights from both design and development backgrounds.
This thesis employs a practice-based research methodology, tackling a real-life project through a process of exploring, discovering, analyzing, benchmarking, and reflecting.
