This study aims to find out the level of importance of team communication in contributing to the success of retail store renovation projects. Renovations financially and commercially fall under project management and retail, where improvements must be implemented while stores are still open, requiring retail operations to be factored in. The three areas covered include the number of communications, the effects of time, clarity of the communication channel, and quality of work and patient satisfaction about team collaboration.
The study employed positivist research philosophy and adopted a deductive approach, asking 131 participants involved in retail renovation projects as project managers, contractors, designers, and site supervisors. This study expands both Media Richness Theory and Stakeholder Theory through evidence about how communication channels should be matched to message complexity during stakeholder’s interactions. This study applied self-report data within a cross-sectional design and therefore, researchers suggested additional longitudinal research combined with evaluations of new communication technologies for further investigation.
The study presents correlations between communication and project results. It found timing of communication may be more helpful than frequency. Documentation and verbal communication were seen as best for accurate information. A positive but weak correlation was established between stakeholder satisfaction and team collaboration. Recommendations include regular meetings, developed documentation systems, clear role assignments, and conflict-solving measures.
