The thesis compared two digital tools, KILVA and Planect, which are used for climate impact assessment in zoning planning in Finland. The aim of the thesis was to evaluate how these tools help low-carbon urban planning and how they can be applied in a practical planning project. A comparative case study was conducted on the Virnakortteli area, which is located in Tikkurila, Vantaa.
The main objective of the thesis was to discuss the development of climate impact assessment and the ongoing digitalisation of planning. By analysing the role and functionality of digital tools in low-carbon urban planning, the thesis contributes to offering a better understanding of their potential to guide sustainable development. Also, by increasing awareness of these tools, planners, municipalities, and other stakeholders can make more informed decisions that enable climate-conscious solutions during the planning process.
By conducting a comparison analysis, the thesis evaluates the applicability of KILVA and Planect in the case study context. The findings highlight key differences and similarities between the tools. The thesis supports the development of more transparent and efficient climate impact assessment practices in the field of planning.
