The thesis examined KONE’s project review practices and their differences between the Scandinavian and Baltic countries. The mapping was considered necessary following an organizational restructuring at KONE, which highlighted the need to understand how projects were carried out in different countries and what kinds of differences existed in project execution across regions. The objective was to deepen the understanding of how various functions, particularly sales, design, and production contributed to projects, and how the collaboration between these functions was implemented during the different phases of the projects.
During the study, the roles and responsibilities of sales, design, and production in project execution were examined in detail. Special attention was given to how different stakeholders communicated during the projects, what kind of practices were in place, and which tools were used to support project management. Based on this information, the aim was to form a comprehensive and accurate picture of how project reviews and implementations were conducted in different countries.
The objective was to compare the operational practices of different countries and identify similarities and differences that could influence project success and profitability. Based on the collected data, concrete improvement proposals were developed for project review practices. The purpose of these proposals was to identify and eliminate problem areas and to create a clearer, more efficient, and more unified approach for future projects. The improvement suggestions were also expected to support organization-wide development and aid in the implementation of standardized practices across different regions.
The mapping was conducted as a qualitative study, and the data was collected through interviews with individuals from various parts of the Nordic countries. The interviewees represented key stakeholders in the projects, and their insights were utilized both in understanding practical operations and in forming the improvement proposals. The interviews helped create an overall picture, which clarified the strengths and challenges observed in project execution in different countries. These findings were then used to draw conclusions that can support the future development and harmonization of project practices throughout the KONE organization.
