Tiivistelmä
The thesis subject was the development of internal communication in a specific organizational unit in a multinational corporation. The study aimed to identify measures to improve the internal communication process. The study originated on internal recognition of the need to improve internal communication. The output was a communication improvement action plan based on the study and corporate framework.
The theoretical framework was built on organizational communication, workplace communication, organizational behavior, and change management. Interlinks of effective communication, leadership, and employee engagement supplemented communication theories.
The research strategy consisted of action research with qualitative data collection and analysis methods. The action cycles took place in the planning stage of controlled change. Minor individual changes were implemented during the study. Semi-structured interviews were used to gain organization unit-specific insights. Supplementary data included workshop materials, meeting observations, and an online inquiry. The communication improvement action plan reflects the organization’s key documents related to communication and change, including corporate policies, internal communication channel strategy, and change management handbook.
The study revealed the need for more structured communication and information sharing. Focus areas of the action plan are improving processes related to meetings and documentation, reducing bottlenecks caused by key person dependency, and increasing communication and sharing related to planning. Defining channels, enabling the rooting of changes, and constructive feedback completed the means to improve overall efficiency through an enhanced internal communication process.
