This thesis examines the Finnish Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) system and its operations as part of ensuring the safety and efficiency of maritime traffic. The work studies the role of VTS in maritime traffic control, traffic management and communication. The work reviews the regional distribution of Finnish VTS centers, technical systems and regulatory background (including IMO, SOLAS, STCW). In addition, the work presents the operations of VTS and cooperation in winter shipping.
The results of this thesis provide up to date and practical information on the structure, operation and significance of the Finnish VTS system for maritime safety. The thesis highlights the central role of VTS in the control of safe and smooth vessel traffic and its impact on the prevention of environmental damage and the efficiency of maritime traffic. The thesis highlights that VTS is not just a technical system, but an activity that emphasizes personnel competence, readiness for exceptional situations and cooperation with other authorities and maritime factors.
