Developing a medication management application : building a mobile application focused on elderly people and doctors

Abstract

Elderly patients often face significant challenges in managing complex medication regimens due to memory loss, declining vision, and unfamiliarity with digital tools. These issues can lead to missed doses, medication errors, and poor treatment outcomes. Compounding the problem, most existing medication management applications are patient-focused and fail to involve doctors in the ongoing monitoring of medication adherence. There is a pressing need for a simple, secure, and connected system that addresses both patient usability and healthcare provider oversight. To address these challenges, MyMedi was developed using the Flutter framework and Dart language. The mobile application aims to enhance medication management for elderly patients while enabling doctors to monitor adherence in real time. The app allows doctors to register patients, assign prescriptions, and track medication usage through a dedicated dashboard. Patients can scan a QR code to access prescription details, receive timely medication reminders, view active prescriptions, and track their medication history. The application interface is designed with large, clearly labelled buttons and minimal clutter to ensure accessibility for elderly users. Key features of MyMedi include QR code-based prescription verification and a timezone-aware reminder system.
