Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this study was to describe how self-care education supports the well-being of older adults living with type 2 diabetes. The aim was to provide knowledge on the role of self-care education given by nurses in supporting the well-being of older adults with type 2 diabetes.
Self-care plays a very important role in promoting and maintaining the quality of health and wellbeing of individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). It empowers T2DM patients with knowledge and skills necessary to implement behaviour changes necessary for mitigating the effects of the disease. A descriptive literature review approach was chosen as a method to complete this thesis. The search strategy of this thesis was developed after defining the criteria for inclusion and exclusion. A total of 14 articles were included for the final study. Data analysis was completed using inductive thematic analysis approach.
The results of this thesis revealed five significant themes related to the role selfcare education in promoting well-being of older adults with T2DM. These include improving clinical outcomes, enhancing psychological well-being, promoting behavioural changes, increasing self-efficacy and motivation, and lastly improving quality of life. In conclusion, diabetic self-care education plays a fundamental role in promoting the well-being of older people with T2DM. This study has demonstrated diabetic self-care education leading improved glycaemic control, reduces hospital admissions and improved self-monitoring. Therefore, nurses are encouraged to prioritize incorporating diabetic self-care education into elderly adults routine diabetic care.
