Tiivistelmä
This study examines how esports participation influences the motivation and perceived academic performance of students at Kajaani University of Applied Sciences (KAMK). With a qualitative research approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven students who actively engage in esports. A thematic analysis was used to analyze the data.
The findings show that esports have both positive and negative effects. Many students reported that gaming helps them relax, manage stress, and return to their studies with better focus. Esports also support skills such as teamwork, communication, discipline, and quick decision-making, which can improve motivation and help with academic tasks. Some students also used gaming as a reward after studying, which helped them maintain a healthy balance between work and leisure.
However, some challenges were identified, such as procrastination, reduced study time, and poor sleep caused by gaming without proper time management. These negative effects were not common for all participants, showing the importance of self-control and time management when combining esports with academic responsibilities.
Overall, the study concludes that esports can positively influence students’ motivation and perceived academic performance when balanced with academic responsibility. Problems mainly occur when gaming is excessive or poorly controlled. The study highlights the importance of maintaining healthy routines to maximize the benefits of esports in student life.
