Older people living in nursing homes often have long-term wounds such as pressure ulcers caused by immobility and health problems. Good wound care helps healing, prevents infection, and improves their comfort and quality of life. Nurses have an essential role here in assessing, documenting, and treating these wounds.
The aim of the study was to find effective wound care interventions for nursing home residents. The purpose was to support nurses in improving the quality of care and residents’ well-being. The research question is: What are the effective wound care interventions for nursing home residents?
A literature review was carried out first using the CINAHL, MEDLINE, and PubMed databases for evi-dence and data. The search produced about 35,228results, and eight studies were included after screening. The data was analyzed using content analysis.
The results showed in two main theme groups, supported by five subthemes: Wound assessment, documentation, wound care training, pain management, and holistic care.
Good assessment and documentation improve treatment and communication, while holistic care and training increases nurses’ skills and residents’ well-being. Pain management is an important tool for the nurses to give the proper treatment and care.
In conclusion, wound care in nursing homes improves when nurses have the right knowledge, when they follow clear documentation, manage pain effectively, and receive continuous training.
