Tiivistelmä
This development-based thesis aimed to create a practical and culturally aware guide to promote physical activity among immigrants in Kajaani, Finland. Physical inactivity and limited participation in local sports and wellness activities remain a challenge for immigrants due to barriers such as language, climate, cultural differences and lack of awareness of available resources. The guide was designed to provide easy-to-understand information, motivation, and practical tools for immigrants from diverse backgrounds, including asylum seekers, students, and families, to help them establish and maintain an active lifestyle.
The thesis combined literature review with qualitative data collected through semi-structured interviews with immigrants and input from relevant stakeholders such as Oppimiskeskus Kainula. The data revealed both structural and personal barriers, such as language difficulties, financial constraints, gender norms and seasonal challenges related to Finland’s cold climate. Based on the findings, a guide was developed in plain English, featuring activity opportunities, registration instructions, motivational tips, cultural insights and winter activity guidance.
The guide’s success was evaluated through simulated feedback and expert reviews. It is intended to be a replicable tool for municipalities and integration services seeking to support immigrant well-being and inclusion through physical activity.
