Tourism plays vital role in Armenia’s economy, contributing significantly to national economy, employment and development of entrepreneurship. Logistical inefficiency, underdeveloped transport infrastructure, along with soft infrastructure affect negatively visitor mobility, accessibility and overall satisfaction. These shortcomings affect Armenia’s competitiveness with other countries in the region, as well as hinder the development of domestic mobility. The objective of the research was to identify key factors affecting tourism mobility and develop strategic recommendations for optimizing Armenia’s tourism supply chain.
A qualitative research method provided insights to current state of tourism logistics and soft infrastructure in Armenia. Semi-structured interviews conducted with Hospitality and Tourism Program students from Dilijan and personal field observations offered a realistic overview of the existing issues. Literature review along with benchmarking of international practices additionally provided a strong basis for developing a roadmap for transportation and infrastructure development in Dilijan, Tavush Region.
Findings revealed disruptions in Armenia’s regional tourism supply chain, that hinder the development of regional tourism. The main issues were lack of transparency and visibility of regional transportation and local service providers, along with sustainability issues arising from currently most used transport mode, which are personal/rented vehicles or taxi services. The research concludes by proposing a roadmap for Tavush region, recommendations for transportation and soft infrastructure development, suggestions for future research directions and actions recommended for governments, entrepreneurs and local authorities.
