Nursing Interventions for Managing Depression Among Older People in Nursing Homes: A Literature Review

Studies have shown a high prevalence of depression among older people living in nursing homes; however, depression among them is profoundly underestimated, misinterpreted, and insufficiently managed. The purpose of the study is to identify and describe nursing interventions for managing depression among older people in nursing homes.
A literature review was conducted, and the databases used to search for reliable articles were EBSCOhost, ScienceDirect, and PubMed. The keywords used for the data search were Depression AND Elderly AND “Nursing Intervention” AND “Nursing Homes.” After the data selection process, a total of fourteen articles were used for the review.
Four Interventions were synthesized from the fourteen articles reviewed: music intervention, memory recall activities, physical activities, and social support activities. The review indicates these interventions are effective, interconnected and focus on engaging residents in various daily activities that can influence their mood, alleviate depression, and promote their physical and mental well-being. However, to improve generalization of these interventions, further studies on how cultural values and different countries’ healthcare systems can influence their effects were recommended.
