This research explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is integrated into user interface (UI) design process and what this shift means for practicing UI designers. Using a literature review and qualitative survey with UI designers, the study identifies where AI tools are most commonly applied in day-to-day UI design process, and evaluates their impact on workflow, creativity, and decision-making.
Findings suggest that AI-enabled tools can accelerate iteration and expand early-stage exploration, but also introduces challenges including generic or homogenized outputs, and risks of core skill degradation.
Additionally, this research investigates the prospect of whether UI designers will be completely replaced by AI. The study then offers some recommendations for UI designers to overcome the challenges in employing AI and to avoid being left behind in the era of AI.
The theoretical framework of the thesis shows an overview of UI design, AI definition and its key subfields, as well as discusses significant applications of AI in UI design and other domains.
