Tiivistelmä
The United States has the highest rate of maternal mortality among developed nations, especially compared to Finland. The quality and efficacy of a healthcare system are crucial for maternal and newborn health outcomes, with nurses’ practices varying across countries, thus influencing these outcomes.

The purpose of this study was to describe the health systems in both the United States and in Finland as related to maternal and newborn health. The aim of this comparative analysis was to distinguish the structural and policy-related nursing care practices that Finland uses, which the United States could adopt to boost the outcomes of maternal and newborn health. A mixed comparative analysis was conducted through the review of research studies, scholarly articles, and governmental websites. Databases such as Laurea Finna, PubMed, and Google Scholar were used for both the theoretical framework and for secondary source data collection, with search terms including Finnish Healthcare System, United States Healthcare System, Maternal Health, Children’s Health, Nursing Care, and Comparative Analysis. In this report, ChatGPT has been employed to refine the language of the text and enhance its fluidity.

Key indicators analyzed included maternal and newborn complications and access to government-funded resources, focusing on difference between the systems. The relationship between qualitative and quantitative data was reviewed to provide insights for advancing maternal and newborn health in the United States. Incorporating a proactive approach to maternal and newborn health, and other philosophies similar to those utilized in Finland, may result in lasting improvements for both mothers and their developing children.
