This thesis is a Literature review about registered nurse's experiences of Burnout in Geriatric Hospital ward. The purpose is to describe registered nurses’ experiences of burnout and identify causes of burnout in geriatric hospital settings. The aim of this thesis is to provide knowledge to the nurses about factors contributing to burnout among registered nurses working in geriatric wards and recommend ways to improve their well-being.
Burnout is a common phenomenon among nurses. Research addresses Research Question “How do factors contributing to burnout among registered nurses in geriatric hospital wards affect their well-being?” The theoretical background describes the key concepts of burnout related to emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduction in personal accomplishment in Nurses work environment and Geriatric ward. Nurses face various challenges that give rise to uncertainty toward assigned responsibility and lowers motivation toward work. Working under excessive pressure, poor structural background, and management affect the wellbeing of nurses and reduces quality in patient care.
The main objective of descriptive literature review with an Inductive Content Analysis conducted to fill a research gap of topic and to find a well-defined framework from the existing research. A literature search is based on PCC framework and chosen from databases such as Science direct, ProQuest, Wiley online library, Sage Journal and PubMed. A total of 9 articles were chosen for the inductive content analysis.
The Findings focus on understanding how different determinants contribute to burnout and affect nurses' well-being in geriatric wards. It also highlighted some important elements like work dissatisfaction, poor leadership, importance of empathy skills, emotional exhaustion, and nursing experiences.
This study concludes that Nurses experience burnout, fatigue, physically and mentally burden due to various emotional, psychological and organizational factors in geriatric ward. According to nurse's experience shortage of manpower, lack of support and training, unhealthy working environment and poor leadership mainly affects the nurse's well-being.
