Abstract
The official working language of the sea is English. The IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases has achieved a strong position in maritime education and training. This position has been specified in the international conventions of STCW 1995 and SOLAS 1974. In these conventions it is a requirement for certification of officers in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tonnages and more to use and understand the IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases. Only a small number of mariners speak English as their native language. This poses special challenges to on board communications and teaching of maritime English. The goal of this thesis was to make a Finnish translation of the IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases to be used as study material on the SMCP courses. The baseline was to make a text especially for the students with not so good English skills. The demands of the students have been considered while making this translation. Special measures have been taken so the contents of the translations would be easy to understand. This way it is easier for the reader to study and learn the actual English phrases. This translation was not available before, so there clearly was a need for it. While writing this thesis mistakes were discovered in the original SMCP text. Some of these mistakes might even jeopardize the safety of the vessel and life. These findings have been recorded and they will be submitted to the International Maritime Organization for possible further corrective actions.
